I lived in Salkum, a small logging town in southwest Washington, from age 3 to 14. I moved to Mossyrock, Washington (10 miles east of Salkum) my freshman year and graduated from Mossyrock High School in 1965. Salkum was a town of about 200 people and Mossyrock was a metropolis of about 400. There were 39 kids in my graduation class. In Salkum my life was kind of like a post WWII, Norman Rockwell book of paintings. My memories of my high school life are good ones mostly because in a small school a kid with even below average talent in most things can still find some success.
I have mostly wonderful memories of both Salkum and Mossyrock. During covid, I wrote over 60 stories about such things as our swimming hole at Mill Creek, playing Little League baseball (Salkum Reds), my Dad and his logging buddies, Valentines Day for a 4th grader, junior high crushes, and high school sports and pranks.
The stories I have written are based on my memory aided by some news articles, yearbook viewing and asking some old classmates. The stories, like movies, are based on true events. I have embellished at some points for entertainment and interest. In some stories I used real people’s names and in others, I have used fictitious names so as not embarrass people or make them mad at me.
Please keep in mind, these stories are for fun, while also giving the reader a look at the 1950’s and 60’s, at least through my eyes and memory of 60+ years ago.
I hope you enjoy them as much as I enjoyed writing them. I will attempt to post one every week or so, depending on what else I am doing. I will announce in Facebook when I make a post. I will also continue to try to figure out how to enhance this website so I can post pictures and make it look more professional.
